All Aboard The NY Transit Museum!

All Aboard!

I think by now we all know I have a little train fanatic on my hands. I love that Josiah's interests are very apparent so it's easy for me to plan a day he will enjoy that will also nurture his interests. We recently visited the NY Transit Museum and stayed until closing. You can probably guess that Josiah had the best time ever.

You have to see it to believe it!

First of all the Museum is located on a corner street in DownTown Brooklyn. The entrance looks exactly like a subway station entrance so you would never recognize the museum if you aren't looking for it. Once you're inside there's so much to explore literally two levels worth! We started in the main level which featured all the turns styles from 1908 to current. Josiah was fascinated by these so we explored them for a while as well as some subway exhibits which you can read about here .

After about 20 minutes we headed to the lower level where the trains were on real train tracks! I just knew we would never go home when I saw Josiah's reaction. We strolled from train car to train car might I add there are over 20 different cars. He really enjoyed the diversity among them from vintage cars with extremely comfortable wicker seats to more current train cars. There were so many that I thought we'd never go home. If you don't this you'll make to the museum anytime soon you can view the train cars here.

Just when I thought we should head home!

I had to carry Josiah up the stairs kicking and screaming in order for us to leave the lower level. However, once we got upstairs I realized there was one more exhibit. Although he didn't notice I thought it was only fair to let him explore the last one before heading home. The last exhibit called, "On the Streets" displayed above ground surface transit. There was a 12 seat city bus, fish bowl bus cab, walk don't walk signs, parking meters, fire hydrants, and more

interactive street objects. At this point there was no turning back. We explored a little longer and then ended our day in the gift store. Josiah picked up all kinds of toy trains to take home but, I purchased a wooden train set for him to paint once we got home. Whenever we visit places that have gift shops I purchase a small item or activity to remind him of the place we visited. The Museum closes at 5 and we left at about 5:50.

Calling all train lovers big and small!

The NY Transit Museum is definitely for anyone who loves trains of all ages. I highly recommend this place as their is so much to explore and its also very educational. I discovered things about trains that I never knew. Josiah was stimulated and I even learned that he knew things I didn't know he knew lol. You can learn a lot about your children when they're in a space or doing something that caters to their interests.

Culture Pass

The museum is not free however, I was able to book free tickets through my culture pass. If you are a NYC resident and want to learn more about culture pass and how you can gain access to one click here.
